Mindfulness Abstract Drawing
4th graders will be able to use multiple methods of mark making by tuning into their five senses to guide their drawings and become self aware of their bodies.
Students learn about mindfulness and how it can be used as a tool in their everyday life to help them to become a better artist, student, and person.
Lesson Plan

01
Mindfulness
Students learn what mindfulness is and how it is different from your mind being full. We discuss the five senses and how you can use them to be mindful. Students practice mindfulness with a body melting and body freezing youtube video.
02
Sight
Students focus on each different sense to guide the mark making for their drawing. Starting with sight, students close their eyes and focus on their breathing. Slowly as a class, we take a moment to do some deep breathing. Students use their breathing to glide an oil pastel on their paper.

03
Sound
Students pick a different color of oil pastel, and have three different sound options to choose from. After taking a few seconds to listen to the sound, students draw what they hear, things they are reminded of, memories, and so much more.
04
Taste
Students close their eyes and listen to a taste narrative about a drink lemonade after playing a game of basketball on a hot summer day. Students listen to the narrative once and then draw the taste on their paper.

05
Smell
Students smell a variety of candles and essential oils without knowing what the scent is. There is a combination of sweet, clean, and horrible scents. Students draw the scent, how it makes them feel, and things it makes them think of.
06
Feel
Students blindly grab a texture item (paper, cardboard, netting, lace, fuzz, sandpaper). With their eyes closed, they take a moment to feel the texture then draw what the texture looks like, feels like, and what it makes them feel.

07
Final Work
08
Artist Statement
Students reflect on how they were mindful and how they can use these new skills outside the art room.
