New Song Workshop: Shine A Light
Towson University hosted New Song Academy's 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to do workshops created by art education students. There was a mix of art activities such as painting, printmaking, drawing, and paper cutting.

At my workshop, Shine a Light, 7th grade students used the idea of Self and Others to better understand those around them and themselves. Students saw the value in recounting past memories and how that has
impacted who they are today by creating a layered cut paper scene within a book.
Preparations
Objective: We will be creating a cut paper scene to shine a light on a memory by breaking down foreground, middle ground, and background to understand how memories are impactful to our identity and to empathize with others experiences.

Step 1: Brainstorm
Students reflected on moments that have impacted their lives and created an image to represent this memory.

Step 2: Plan
After picking the memory they wanted to shine a light on, we discussed foreground, middle ground, and background to discuss how they could create more interesting compositions. They then took their designs and split their compositions into three separate parts.

Step 3: Draw & Cut
Students each received their own book to begin drawing their memories. Each section of their composition got its own page to further help students to think about depth and space.

Final Products
As students started to finish, we used a light to shine at the back of their pages. With this light we got to discuss negative and positive space. This allowed for students to make revisions and add more details where need be.

Other Workshops
There were many other workshops students got to experience on this day, here are just a few.
