Sculptural Mugs

Students will create a sculptural mug that demonstrates understanding and success in a variety of traditional hand building clay techniques such as slab and coil, as well as traditional and contemporary glazing techniques.

 Students will be inspired by textures of nature or natural phenomena to create a functional mug or a non functional sculptural vessel

Artist Exemplars

Students learn about Katie Marks, a mug ceramicist and Brian Rochefort, a sculptural ceramicist. and how they use nature to inspire their ceramic work. Students decide if they want to make a functional or non functional mug

Texture Research and Thumbnail Sketches

Students begin researching textures of nature and natural phenomena they find interesting. Through quick sketches of the textures and phenomena, students learn facts about nature that peaks their interest. Students sketch 4 mug designs that incorporate the texture and or natural phenomena.

Mug Building

Students use an evenly rolled out slab to create the walls and bottom of their mug. They also attach or carve their textures into the surface. Studentrs spend time on how they can create interesting handles that unifies their design. They learn vocabulary like slab, coil, slip and score, leather hard, .

Staining, Underglazing, Clear Glazing

Students learn about staining, underglazing and clear glazing and the differences between each. Students use techniques to create their desired effects to better reveal their textures.

Artist Statement

Through an artist statement, students reflect on the art making process and how effectively they were able to create their design. Students think about a title and what changes they may make if they did the process again.

Final Artworks

Students learn about photographing 3D objects and how to ensure there is no distractions in their photo. Students discuss their strengths and weaknesses of their mug to the class.
